A Pioneer of Science in Pakistan
Dr Abdus Salam was no doubt one of the pioneers of scientific research in Pakistan. He was a theoretical physicist by profession and stayed involved with the government of Pakistan in various advisory roles.
Couple of key organizations that he helped found were SUPARCO and TPG (Theoretical Physics Group). His major contribution was the electroweak theory that won him the Nobel prize in 1979. Belonging to the Muslim minority Ahmediyya community, he departed Pakistan in protest when, in 1974, Pakistani parliament declared Ahmedis Non-Muslims.
